- Tony Rock performs at Tampa Improv this weekend
There’s a lot of variety on comedy club stages this weekend. Men, women, musicians and magicians are all in town to make you laugh. Here’s the rundown on upcoming comedy offerings:
Comedy Clubs
Tony Rock at Tampa Improv. Yes, Rock is related to Chris, but he’s an accomplished stand-up in his own right. With nearly 15 years in the business, Rock has a more mellow demeanor than his sibling and his comedy is stamped with his own unique perspectives. Still, there’s a biting wit that’s similar to what you’ve appreciated from his older brother.
Showtimes are Thursday at 8 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. 1600 E. Eighth Ave., Tampa. Info: improvtampa.com or 813-864-4000.
Mustache Kings at Tampa Improv. One part music and one part comedy, the Mustache Kings are a funny duo known for their prominent facial hair and a sharp sense of humor. Funny songs and traditional jokes are both part of the bill. One night only. Showtime is Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Henry Cho at Side Splitters. Cho is an Asian-American with a southern accent. That’s pretty rare, but he’s also a clean comedian. That’s almost equally rare in today’s comedy scene. But he’s funny, so if you like to laugh but don’t care for the typical adult language and content, this is probably the show for you. Showtimes are Thursday at 8:30 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. 12938 N. Dale Mabry, Tampa. Info: sidesplitterscomedy.com or 813-960-1197.
Rahn Hortman at Side Splitters. Like Henry Cho, who headlines most of the shows at Side Splitters this weekend, local comedian Rahn Hortman is also a clean performer. But whether he’s talking about his children or other family members, his comedy still has a distinct edge. His Sunday show is a benefit for individuals and families battling Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Showtimes are Saturday at 10:15 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m.
Julie Scoggins at Snappers. You probably wouldn’t expect a 6′ 2″ ex-trucker to be performing stand-up comedy. And even if you did, you wouldn’t expect them to be female. And if you somehow got that far, would you expect them to be funny? Scoggins is all of the above, offering blue-collar wit and crowd-pleasing material on stages around the country. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. 36657 U.S. 19 N., Palm Harbor. Info: snappersgrill.com or 727-938-2027.
Carole Montgomery at Coconuts (St. Pete Beach). Montogmery is a longtime comedian, writer, wife and mother, and those four roles get mixed up together in her set. Expect plenty of family-based material culled from both real-life experiences and her creative mind. Showtimes are Wednesday-Saturday at 9:30 p.m. 6200 Gulf Blvd. at the Beachcomber Resort, St. Pete Beach. Info: coconutscomedyclubs.com or 727-360-5653.
Elliot Smith at Two Palms Bar Bistro. Smith is a magician, so expect some sleight-of-hand and a side of showmanship with his humor. If you want something a little different than the traditional comedy club fare — and you like magic — look no further. Showtime is Saturday at 7 p.m. 2950 Gulf To Bay Blvd., Clearwater. Info: tampabaycomedy.com or 727-741-8014.
Mike Rivera at Two Palms Bar Bistro. Rivera was dubbed “America’s Funniest Teacher” by ABC’s The View, and there is quite a bit of teaching in his set. It’s not part of any school curriculum you’ve ever seen, but it is fast-paced, adult-oriented and funny. Showtime is Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
