A YEAR AGO, Lisa Hanawalt didn’t even know the James Beard Awards had a Journalism/Humor category. This year, the acclaimed cartoonist is turning into a mainstay.
For the second straight year, Hanawalt has been named as a Humor finalist for the Beard Foundation’s Book, Broadcast and Journalism Awards — this time for her illustrated work “On the Trail With Wylie” for Lucky Peach.
“I’m honored to be nominated and recognized for my skills as a chef!” Hanawalt wryly tells The Post’s Comic Riffs. “Stay tuned for my cookbook, featuring signature dishes like ‘Hurry-Up Scrambled Eggs’ and ‘Handfuls of Cereal with Maple Syrup Reduction.’ ”
“Hurry Up” would suit Hanawalt’s busy docket. The California-based creator — whose book “My Dirty Dumb Eyes” (which includes some of her Beard-nominated work) was well-received last year — is also now character designer on Netflix’s first original adult animated series, “BoJack Horseman: A Tale of Fear, Loathing and Animals” (featuring the voices of Aaron Paul, Will Arnett and Amy Sedaris).
(Note: Also nominated in the Humor category is my longtime Style colleague, Monica Hesse, for “Gwyneth Paltrow: We Love to Hate Her, But We’ll Buy Her Cookbook Anyway”; and Dark Rye’s Ira Chute for “A Vision of Post-Apocalyptic Cuisine: Frankenchicken.” Post writers Eli Saslow and Tamar Haspel are also finalists.)
The James Beard Awards ceremony will be May 2 at New York’s Gotham Hall.
