I hope everyone’s off to a great 2014 and staying warm out there! My 2014 started off with a change in glucose meters. Apparently Accu-Check strips are no longer going to be covered by my insurance. It’s Ok though cause the letter I got in the mail gave me a variety of OneTouch strips I could choose from. Yeah, I say it’s OK, but what if I didn’t want to change to OneTouch?
Changing strips means you must change meters. Now, they were nice enough to give you a code to get a free meter once you decide which one you want. If I had to go pay money for one, this column would have a totally different tone. Or, if I had spent a lot on the meter I’m currently using, I would not be happy either. Luckily, I got mine for free with a coupon, so it’s not too big of a loss. I just have to call my doctor and get a new prescription to my mail order pharmacy. Which is kind of a pain in the butt, but I mean come on I could not have insurance or I could be trying to manage this disease with out a meter at all. Things could be much worse so I’m choosing not to complain. I am wondering though which options I’ll lose in the future. Will they be telling me which pump I must use? I’m certainly hoping not.
On a different note, I have two stories I’d like to share. One just because it was a proud moment for me and one because it was hilarious (please emphasis that hilarious).
So here’s the first, it was New Years Eve. We had had a few beverages at a party and had been snacking around. I decided it was time to check my blood. I was 99. My non-diabetic friend next to me said she wanted to see what she was. So I gladly checked her. She was 103. Did I mention I was 99. That’s pretty darn close and made me pretty darn happy. Of course everyone around the table then had to check theirs too. And, of course I covered the meter and made everyone guess what it was going to read. It was our source of entertainment for the next few minutes. I’m happy to report we didn’t get any abnormal readings.
For the other story, I have to go back to Black Friday. My mom, my aunt, my sister-in-law and I always head out before the sunrises and hunt down the deals. I was super prepared this year. I had my notebook, the ads, my coupons, but I didn’t have anything to treat a low. We were in Elder-Beerman when I went drastically low. Like I mean seeing spots, thinking I was going to pass out drastic. None of us had anything. That’s when my sister-in-law, who is nursing my seven-month-old niece, offered her services. She pointed to her chest and said, “You know Jen, if it comes down to it.” Of course she was kidding. Even though I was super low, I laughed so had. That’s one great thing about her…she can always find the humor in the situation. And, she’s a nurse, so I guess that’s a pretty great trait to have.
