Re “When City Elections Were Fun,” by Lee Siegel (Op-Ed, Sept. 2):
The greatest campaign line ever was uttered by the newspaperman Jimmy Breslin in his 1969 run for New York City Council president:

To the Editor:
Yes, as Lee Siegel points out, times have changed. His article reminded me of the comment by Jimmy Breslin, a candidate for City Council president, on Election Day 1969.
As he emerged from his polling place, a reporter stuck a microphone in his face and asked him to comment on the election. He replied, “I am mortified to have taken part in a process that required bars to be closed.”
